The present study analyzes the fundamental modes of transformation in narrative structure during the intermedial transition of documentaries from visual to auditory media. It emphasizes creative script reconstruction and opens innovative possibilities for narrative re-creation. This transition, driven by the necessary removal of visuals, directly confronts a triple narrative challenge: elimination of spatial contextualization and scale, absence of rapid physical actions, and loss of the emotional dimension of the subject's face. The reconstruction process centers on compensating for the missing visual dimension in radio format.
Using a qualitative methodology with comparative case study and qualitative content analysis, the research examines selected BBC nature documentaries from the series Seven Worlds, One Planet and Frozen Planet II.
Findings show that compensating for the lack of visuals occurs not through simple substitution, but via systematic redesign of narrative structure through precise activation of triple auditory agency (auditory framing, cognitive load management, and narrator as emotional representative).
Such an approach provides the structural capacity for transforming the listener from passive to active and enriches the story world mentally by highlighting structural differences between radio and television versions, shifts narrative focus from objective to auditory, and provides a comprehensive model for innovative radio production. Ultimately, this approach not only fills the visual gap but creates a new semantic world absent in the visual version, adding fresh layers of meaning to the narrative.
