This study investigates how the ideal world is represented in Iranian television advertisements during the 2010s, drawing upon Jean Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra. The central question asks how Iranian television commercials, through simulation and the creation of new meanings, construct an alluring utopian world that stimulates audiences toward consumerism. The use of such seductive imagery functions to conceal social realities and the anxieties of everyday life.
The aim of this research is to provide a more precise understanding of media performance through television advertising in shaping the social and cultural mentality and needs of audiences. The research is applied in purpose and qualitative in approach. Data collection combines documentary, library, and reliable online sources. The main tools include observation and review of Iranian TV commercials using a case study strategy. The study is descriptive–analytical in its findings.
Initially, Baudrillard’s concept of simulacra is described theoretically. Then, five television advertisements are purposefully selected based on the prominent presence of a simulated ideal world. These samples are analyzed according to Baudrillardian elements such as characterization and distinction, demonstration of comfort and welfare, luxury and abundance, freedom, success, ideal relationships, and life in nature.
Findings: Television advertisements centered on utopian ideals construct a dreamy, seductive world far removed from daily reality—a controlled reality where consumption is equated with happiness and satisfaction. By instilling artificial needs, they reproduce a consumerist lifestyle and perpetuate the illusion of an attainable ideal.
