This study examines the role of interactive narratives in the manifestation of group identity in video games, with Final Fantasy XIV selected as the case study. The main issue of the research is how the process of formation and consolidation of collective identity in digital environments occurs through interactive storytelling mechanisms and user participation in narratives. The central research question is how interactive narratives can lead to a sense of belonging, strengthen social interactions, and converge shared values and beliefs among users. The overall aim of the study is to analyze the gradual stages of this process, from users’ initial entry into the game environment to the final consolidation of group identity, within the framework of a conceptual model.Research data were collected and analyzed through direct observation of gameplay, analysis of narrative and interactive structures of the game, and qualitative coding based on thematic analysis. The findings indicate that entering the narrative space of the game sets the foundation for creating a shared sense of belonging and ownership, while participation in group activities and joint decision-making leads to the emergence of multilayered narratives and convergence of values.Additionally, individual conflicts and difficulties in group coordination were identified as major challenges in the formation of collective identity, but positive collective experiences and repeated cooperation played a moderating role. The results, beyond the case study, show that interactive narratives are a key mechanism for strengthening social cohesion and forming collective identity in digital contexts, and can be insightful both theoretically and practically for online game design and cultural policymaking.
